The estate is located between the 7,000-acre Virgin Islands National Park and the Virgin Islands Coral Reef Monument — more than 12,000 acres of federally protected waters. Experience
Hit the Park Reef Bay Trail (2.2 miles, 2 hours) in the national park. The trail first descends through a shady forest and then passes along several 18th-century Danish sugar plantations. Along the way are ancient rock carvings (petroglyphs) made by Taino Indians. Guided hikes are available with a national park ranger; $4 adults; free for ages 16 and under; www.nps.gov/VII.

Few resorts offer accommodations directly on a stunning beach with matching views. But the Deluxe Suites at Crystal Cove at Sapphire Beach are just a few steps to a half-mile-long beach. Crystal Cove is one mile from Red Hook, with its boutiques, restaurants, ferry to the other islands and a grocery store. Suites feature fine furnishings, spacious living rooms and porches, granite kitchens, washer/dryers and two bathrooms.
