For the AJC

If you are an active or retired member of the U.S. military, a U.S. firefighter, or a U.S. law enforcement officer – and you like to golf – you should consider taking advantage of the "American Hero Stay & Play Package" that is being offered by The Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida (about an hour south of Jacksonville).

The "American Hero Stay & Play Package" includes one round of golf on the resort's renowned King & Bear championship course (co-designed by Arnold Palmer & Jack Nicklaus) or the popular Slammer & Squire championship course; range balls; deluxe accommodations for one night in a newly remodeled guest room; a ticket to the adjacent World Golf Hall of Fame per golfer and daily breakfast in the resort's 500 South restaurant.

The rate for one golfer/one non-golfer in the room (or for one person in the room) is from $179 per room, per night. The rate for two golfers in the room is from $279 per room, per night. The offer is valid through Sept. 30, based on availability.

For non-golfers who simply wish to stay at the lush resort, experience historic St. Augustine, visit the nearby Atlantic beaches, the resort is also offering a very nice "American Hero Rate," which is also available to active or retired members of the U.S. military, U.S. police officers, and U.S. firefighters. The rate starts at $89 per room, per night. In addition to deluxe accommodations in a newly remodeled guest room, the special rate also includes complimentary breakfast for two. Valid on stays through Dec. 31, based on availability.

"Our nation's military personnel, law enforcement officers and firefighters make so many sacrifices, for which we're very grateful, and we're offering this special package and rate so that they can enjoy a relaxing getaway at a beautifully remodeled resort, with so many recreational options," said Mark Schwantner, general manager of The Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village.

Situated within the lush 6,300-acre World Golf Village, the resort completed a property-wide $10 million renovation in 2008. The project included the complete remodeling of all 301 guest rooms and suites, dramatic changes to the resort's 10-story lobby atrium and entry area, remodeling of all guest room corridors, an expanded fitness center, remodeling of the billiard room, and a new restaurant and bar.

Guest rooms and suites at the resort feature a contemporary design with an Asian feel, which includes rich red bed coverings, crisp white linens, along with a color scheme of warm neutral gold. In-room offerings also include a flat-panel television, the Marriott JackPack, high-speed Internet access, two telephones with data ports, a wet bar and refrigerator, and in-room coffee.

The resort is located right next to the impressive World Golf Hall of Fame, which is the ultimate celebration of the game of golf and its greatest players with engaging interactive exhibits and historic golf artifacts. The exhibit features a grass 18-hole putting course, a 132-yard Island Challenge Hole, an IMAX Theater, and the Walk of Champions.

Set aside some sightseeing time to explore historic St. Augustine. Founded in 1565, the area is rich with Spanish architecture, with charming cobblestone streets and many fascinating historical sites such as the historic Castillo de San Marcos fort, and The Fountain of Youth.

To take advantage of the special package or rate, you simply need to ask for the special package or rate upon booking, and then show your appropriate supporting ID upon check-in.
