Big River Crossing, Memphis

Need to work off some of that Memphis-style barbecue? A walk or bike ride across the mighty Mississippi can help make room for more. Opened in October, the Big River Crossing is a free, mile-long pedestrian bridge that spans the muddy waters, offering unparalleled views of both Memphis in Tennessee and West Memphis in Arkansas from sunrise until 10 p.m. daily. The path runs adjacent to train tracks that link the two states and claims to be the longest public pedestrian bridge in the country.

Skydive Tennessee

If jumping out of a plane is on your bucket list, cross it off with a visit to this skydiving school based at the Tullahoma Regional Airport, about 75 miles northwest of Chattanooga. Master jumpers accompany first-timers about 14,000 feet up and then share the 60-second free fall before making a soft landing. Time in the air is about six minutes. Four- and six-hour classes are also available for those who want to solo. And while you’re enjoying the pull of gravity, the event is videotaped for you to relive later. Jumpers must be at least 18 years of age and not weigh more than 250 pounds.
