After hard times, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, Miss., has finally opened.

The rebuilt hotel, originally scheduled to open just days after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, debuted last week with more than 1,400 slots, 50 table games and six poker tables in its casino. There are 318 rooms, a spa, five restaurants and a 1,400-person concert venue.

Concerts scheduled during the first month include bands such as 3 Doors Down, Kid Rock, Poison, Ratt and Cheap Trick.

The Hard Rock's long-awaited welcome has followed other newcomers and reopenings in the storm-ravaged area in the past year, including the Silver Slipper Casino, the first land-based casino to be built from the ground up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The 100,000-square-foot Silver Slipper opened last year on the beach near Waveland in Hancock County. The closest casino to the Mississippi-Louisiana line, it has more than 1,000 slots, 26 table games and a nine-table poker room, plus three restaurants and an entertainment venue.

Some Southeast casinos are being updated, including the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, which spent $32 million in renovations and additions and has further plans to develop the property on Florida's east coast.

Three pari-mutuels in Broward County have opened with slot machines — more than 1,000 at Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino, 1,500 at the Isle Casino and Racing in Pompano Park and 1,100 at Mardi Gras Racetrack & Gaming Center, both in Hallandale Beach. A fourth facility, Dania Jai-Alai, is expected to open its casino in 2008, said Steve Bourie, gambling expert and author of the "2007 American Casino Guide" (Casino Vacations, $16.95).

The state and Seminole Tribe of Florida are continuing to negotiate a deal regarding the tribe's belief that it is entitled to operate the Las Vegas-style machines in its casinos. Broward County voters approved the machines in 2005.

Bourie says he believes the machines will ultimately be allowed. An August deadline has been set for a resolution before federal officials intervene.
