1. Walking the Wild West. A 17-day Canyons and Cowboys trip offered by Adventure Co. takes families on hikes in Yosemite and on Navajo-led Jeep tours through Monument Valley. The trip ends with two nights in Las Vegas. www.adventurecompany.co.uk
2. Cruising the Deep South. This summer could be the last chance to take a ride on a wooden paddle-wheel steamboat through the Deep South now that Congress has decided to rescind the license of the historic Delta Queen. There are three- to 11-night cruises. www.americaasyoulikeit.com
3. Riding in Utah. This is the home of national parks, monuments, conservation and wilderness areas and narrow canyons so rugged that they are best explored on horseback.
4. River-rafting in Idaho. The Salmon River is ideal for a family rafting trip. www.americanroundup.com (Click on the Idaho section.)
5. Camper vans in California. Cruising around the national parks of California in a recreational vehicle must be one of the ultimate family bonding experiences.
6. Watery wildlife in Florida. Ditch Disney and get up close to some real wildlife in Florida's Everglades. Rent a cabin on Marco Island and take an airboat ride along the mangrove creeks.
7. Whale-watching in New England. Spotting humpback and minke whales off Cape Cod, kayaking around Martha's Vineyard and cycling through the pretty town of Sandwich are all good for family fun. Start off in Boston, one of the most child-friendly cities in the United States.
8. Cowboys and Indians in Oklahoma. Stay at Meadowlake Dude Ranch near Tulsa, where children can learn to ride and there is a range of ranch activities such as steer roping, tomahawk throwing and pistol shooting. www.ranchamerica.co.uk
