The best way to start is by realizing that clothes can be reworn, even when you're away for a few weeks, he said, "especially if you're on vacation."

He recommends the Web site Onebag.com for packing inspiration and these tips.

• Fold everything by item, put one-third of it back in the closet, then roll what won't wrinkle. "Your suitcase should not be jam-packed. You're probably going to buy souvenirs."

• Wear neutrals. Pick colors that go together and layers that match. Women: consider khaki skirts, which wear well and won't wrinkle. Men: gray T-shirts hide dirt better than white.

• "Unless you're going to a third-world country or a very remote area, you can clean these things while you're traveling. Wash things in your hotel sink. Carry travel packets of detergent."

• Limit the number of shoes. Unless you're eating out or staying at a high-end resort, you don't need dress shoes.

• Going to a colder climate? Bring two sweaters, not 10. Wear your coat on the plane, but be kind to your neighbor and stow it overhead.
