Best practices for airport travelersThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution

CONSTRUCTION:
The construction of a people-mover train linking the airport with a new rental car complex across I-85 has forced changes in the location of several ground transportation services, including hotel shuttles and park-and-ride buses. Travelers are advised to watch for directional signs.
WHEN TO ARRIVE:
Airport and airline officials advise domestic travelers to arrive at least one hour before departure times. International passengers should arrive at least two hours before departure. Add one hour for during a holiday period.
TIP: Print out your boarding pass on your home computer or use self-serve kiosks to bypass check-in lines and go straight to baggage-check stations.
SECURITY LINES:
Hartsfield-Jackson's primary checkpoint is on one end of the main terminal atrium. It has 22 lanes, and airport and TSA workers will direct travelers and check for paperwork. A maze line leads to the checkpoint, but sometimes the line backs up into the atrium or beyond. If this happens, don't panic. The line usually moves slowly but steadily.
You must have a boarding pass and photo ID to go through security and on to the gate concourses.
TIP: As an alternative to the main checkpoint, consider using the T-gate checkpoint at the far end of the North Terminal.
ELITE FLIER SECURITY LINES:
At busy times, the airport opens these lines to all passengers, regardless of elite status. These lines are not always quicker than the normal line on busy days.
SCREENING:
The TSA guidelines call for all liquids, gels and aerosols to be in containers no larger than 3 ounces. Containers must be placed in a 1 quart-size, clear plastic zip-top bag. Only one bag is permitted per traveler. It must be removed from your carry-on and placed in the security bin for X-ray screening. Prescription drugs, baby formula and milk are allowed in quantities larger than 3 ounces and are not required to be in a zip-top bag, but they must be declared for inspection at the checkpoint. Beverages purchased after screening may be brought on board.
TIP: Make sure your see-through plastic bag is quart size and a zip top. Only one bag per passenger.
MEETING ARRIVALS:
Since non-ticketed people are not allowed beyond security checkpoints, you'll have to meet arrivals at the top of the "up" escalator from the trains to the main terminal, or at some other spot.
TIP: Make sure your arriving friend or relative knows you won't be at the gate.
FILM:
The bomb-detecting machines will ruin your film, so pack it on your carry-on.
CARRY-ONS:
Small sharp objects such as scissors, tweezers, nail clippers and small tools may be carried on board. But if in doubt, leave it at home or pack it in checked luggage.
