Trains heading north and south make daily stops in Atlanta and Gainesville — one leaving for New York and another departing for New Orleans.

The New Orleans-bound train stops in Birmingham, Anniston and Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Meridian, Laurel, Hattiesburg and Picayune, Miss.; and Slidell, La.

Stops on the New York-bound train out of Atlanta include Gainesville and Toccoa; Clemson and Greenville, S.C.; Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Washington; Baltimore; and Philadelphia. Fares vary depending on dates and accommodations.

Changing trains in Washington can speed up your trip. The Acela Express can reach speeds of up to 150 mph and runs from Washington to Boston, with several stops in between.

GREYHOUND

The main terminal is at 232 Forsyth St. (404-584-1728) downtown. Atlanta is the fifth-busiest terminal, in terms of passenger volume, with New York as No 1. Here are the others rounding out the top 10: Philadelphia; Atlantic City, N.J.; Los Angeles; Richmond; Baltimore; Nashville; Washington; and Dallas.
