There's something quite extraordinary about Palm Springs, California. Although hip, modern and happening, visitors still get a sense of going back in time to the 50's/60's. A lot of that has to do with the ongoing preservation of the architecture of that era — and maybe just knowing that you're in the middle of a desert and that this is THE place to kick back and relax.

Purple mountains, lush green golf courses, one-story hotels wrapped around cool pools, a main street with the finest in dining and shopping, an easy-to-use town trolley system, and close to Joshua Tree National Park (stunning and stark beauty) - what more does one need on a getaway?
What's even better is the price to get there. Round-trip rates, inclusive of every tax, fee and fuel surcharge, is only $251 - priced perfectly so that you can afford to splurge once you get there.
One of the best features of the sale is that it's valid on trips finished on or before November 12. And, this rate is good Mondays-Saturdays (Sunday travel is at regular rates which start from $500).
There are no minimum stays to meet and no blackout dates to avoid.
The catch? There is no ticket-by date on this offer which means the rate could disappear any second. Although I could reasonably suggest that this sale exists due to AirTran current systemwide sale which runs through July 29 (to compete with LAX).
The airlines offering this rate include American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and USAirways (all require a stop/connection).
Need a cool place to stay? Consider the sophisticated Pepper Tree Inn with four-night stays through September 30 from $297 for a poolside double room to $507 for a King suite. www.peppertreepalmsprings.com
Save on fine dining menus at The Falls Restaurant when you visit through September 30. The annual Prix Fixe dinner menu is $35 per person for three course (with a choice of courses) - seven days a week. 155 S. Palm Canyon Drive, www.thefallsrestaurants.com
Another posh resort to ponder is the Esmeralda Resort & Spa, a Renaissance Resort with mid-week summertime rates from just $94 a night. www.renaissanceesmeralda.com
