There's still time to eek out a summer vacation. And one cool spot to chill out is in the New England states — from the Green and White Mountains of Vermont to the gorgeous coastal regions of Maine. (Click here for a story and photos about summer travel in Maine and here for a story and photos about the new botanical garden in Boothbay.)

Northwest Airlines offers a couple of deals to get you there. Round-trip rates of $344 are offered to Burlington, Vermont and valid any day of the week on trips you plan to finish on or before June 10, 2009. The sale price requires a Saturday night minimum stay to one month maximum.

Even better is the Northwest rate to Portland, Maine of $278.50. It's valid on Tuesdays or Wednesdays on trips finished on or before November 5. Give at least a three-week advance notice of travel. Plan to stay at least any three nights. Some blackout dates apply - August 28-September 2 and October 9-13.

Both of these special rates are inclusive of every tax, fee and fuel surcharge. http://www.nwa.com

Enjoy a luxurious stay this summer at the Castle Hill Resort and Spa, located in the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains. The resort, a member of Small Luxury Hotels and a Historic Hotel of America, offers mid-week stays from $79 a night at the Pointe Hotel; $99 in a resort home at the Hotel Queen and $30 more per night for a stay in the castle mansion.

Stays include a welcome bottle of champagne and chocolates, access to the resort's Aveda Spa, fitness area, and pool; a $25 voucher toward a pix-fixe 4 course dinner for two at the Castle Hill Restaurant and a $25 voucher to apply to a 50-minute Elemental Nature Massage.

What's not included is continental breakfast at $20 per night and a resort tax of $20 per night.

Fisherpeople should try their luck in the Black River, located just minutes from Castle Hill Resort & Spa. This four-mile stretch of river is managed by the state of Vermont as a "Trophy Trout Area", one of only four in the state, with fish averaging 14" to 18".

The Black is classic New England water with an interesting mix of pools, runs, and riffles. Kevin Ladden, a local Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide, can guide you for a day on the river (including all equipment). To make a reservation, call 1-888-764-6836.
