• To mark the anniversary of its founding 400 years ago, special events in Quebec City will be held all summer. Highlights include a 40-minute sound-and-light show every night, June 20-July 29. On July 3, the precise date of its founding, a military parade will be followed by song and dance events. The New France Festival is Aug. 5-10, with parades, music and food. On Aug. 15, a tribute to the St. Lawrence River will include a giant show and party on a 10,000-square-foot floating dance floor. www.myquebec2008.com

• Liverpool, England, will throw a four-day party to commemorate its 800th birthday. One of the highlights will be a big fireworks displays on Aug. 28, with a street party that begins at 3 p.m. The Mathew Street Music Festival Aug. 24-27 starts things off.
The city is also the starting point of the Tall Ships Race July 18-21. The competition, bringing nearly 100 tall ships (from 30 feet to more than 300 feet long) and 3,000 crew members to the Mersey, will race from Liverpool toward Norway and the Netherlands. www.visitliverpool.com
Next to the Cavern Club where the Beatles started their rise to fame is the new four-star Hard Days Night Hotel with themed retro rooms, each with Beatles artwork. • Munich, Germany, will celebrate its 850th birthday. Events kick off with the City Foundation Festival June 14-15 followed by the Old Town Ring Road Festival July 19-20 and the Isar Bridge Festival Aug. 1-3.
