Try something a little different for a fun getaway.
• Mexico City's finest museums such as the National Museum of Anthropology, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museo Rufino Tamayo and the Museum of Popular Art, are a short walk from the Marquis Reforma Hotel. The hotel offers lovely views over the rooftops of the city and along the famous avenue Paseo de la Reforma. This boutique, art deco-style hotel has rates from $320 a night on stays through Dec. 31 on the "family business" package (minimum two-night stay required). Included are accommodations in a spacious suite, breakfast buffet (for two adults and two children up to 12 years old) and excursions with transportation and tickets to the monumental ruins of the pre-Aztec city of Teotihuacan, and to the contemporary Ciudad de los Ninos (City of Children) — a kid-size city of streets, buildings, businesses and vehicles where kids take on the roles of more than 60 professions, earn a salary and transact business. www.marquisreforma.com

• Off the beaten path in California are the coastal twin towns of Eureka and Arcata, about 250 miles north of San Francisco. Eureka is considered to be one of the nation's loveliest small towns with its Victorian architecture. But the region's top attraction is Humboldt Redwoods State Park, where 2,000-year-old redwood trees soar to 360 feet. Northern California is ideal for road trips along Calif. 1 (mostly coastal) and U.S. 101 (mostly inland). The two merge at the rugged Lost Coast along the King Mountain Range. You can stay just an hour north of San Francisco at Bodega Bay Lodge and Spa, the spot made infamous in the Alfred Hitchcock film "The Birds." This peaceful location offers dramatic scenery overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Pack some warm gear if you plan some time on these windswept beaches. Bed-and-breakfast rates, from $215, include accommodations with a fireplace and balcony with an oceanview. www.humboldtredwoods.org , www.bodegabaylodge.com
• Twenty minutes from the Dominican Republic's Puerto Plata's airport is the tropical resort of Cabareta, a hip beach community on the north coast with a reputation for its hot nightlife, clubs and casino action. Relax at the beach front condo-hotel Velero with affordable accommodations at rates from $79 a night for a double room on April 28-June 9 stays or $116 through April 27. Larger studio suites are priced from $147 now and $100 during the later season. All accommodation have views of the resort's garden, the sea and over three miles of beach. Suites are outfitted with kitchens, and all accommodations have a private balcony or patio. There is an infinity pool, beach club and a fitness center. In town are restaurants and shops. www.velerobeach.com
