The rules

Categories: We will judge these categories:

1. People
2. Places (pictures of buildings, monuments, landscapes, nature)
3. Animals (pictures of wildlife, farm animals or pets)

Location: All photos must have been taken by you at least 100 miles from your home.

Number of submissions: You may submit one digital color photo or one print color photo for each category. Entries with more than one photo per category will be disqualified.

Date taken: Photos must have been taken from Nov. 1, 2005, to Nov. 30, 2006.

Format: For digital photos or JPEGs, the original images should be 200 dpi, with the largest dimension 10 inches or less. When sending photos, compress the photo on "medium" or "high" in your photo editing program.

Print photos must be on high-quality photo paper, and size cannot exceed 8 by 10 inches; please do not mount or frame photos. Label each submission on the back legibly with the category you are entering and your name, address and phone number. Include a brief description of the names of people in the photo, who shot the photo, and when and where it was shot.

Amateurs only: The contest is limited to amateur photographers, age 18 and older. By entering, you agree to publication in the Journal-Constitution and posting on ajc.com.

Finalists will be asked to sign a freelance agreement that certifies the photo is theirs. (Employees of the Journal-Constitution and Cox Enterprises and their families are not eligible.) Some photos may be held for publication as part of other coverage.

Because of the volume of photos, we cannot return print photos or accept e-mail photos.

How to enter

You may submit a JPEG.

For prints, mail to Byrone Battles, Travel Photo Contest, Features Department, P.O. Box 4689, Atlanta, GA 30302.

The judging

Each week, our in-house judges will select finalists, and those photos will be posted on ajc.com/travel. The first set of finalists will be posted online Oct. 30 and the remaining sets on Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20, Nov. 27 and Dec. 4.

After Dec. 1, our outside judges from Atlanta Celebrates Photography will pick first-, second- and third-place winners in each category from among the weekly finalists. Those winners will be announced in the Dec. 17 Travel section and at ajc.com/travel.

The prizes

In addition to having their photos published, first-place winners in each category selected by our judges will receive certificates for AirTran tickets; second-place winners will receive $100 and third-place winners will receive $50.
