Mary Catherine Matheny / Special
Havana, Cuba; June 6, 2007.

Ilhan Ermutlu / Special
We were in a Bulgarian town, Nessebur, and this was a display of one of the stores.

SECOND PLACE:

ELIZABETH MARBURGER of Springfield, Va. / in the Netherlands

This charming and tranquil scene of boats at a dock was captured from a hotel room in Amsterdam.

Corinne Adams said: "The photo has wonderful composition and I like the complementary colors of the boats."

Susan Todd-Raque said: "The photo has great lines, and the orange buoys are what really makes it. I like the perspective from above."

Marburger shot this photo through a window using a Canon Rebel XTI digital camera.

THIRD PLACE:

MARY CATHERINE MATHENYof Athens / in Cuba

A kind Cuban woman invited the photographer into her humble home.

Corinne Adams said: "It's so film noir ... it feels like a stage set, but has enough reality to see it in reality or in dreams."

Susan Todd-Raque said: "You almost expect Humphrey Bogart to come in and an overhead fan to start going, throwing more shadows. What also makes this photo is the imperfection of the wall behind the fan."

Matheny shot this photo using a Nikon D40 digital camera.

FOURTH PLACE:

ILHAN ERMUTLUof Alpharetta / in Bulgaria

This eye-catching display of mannequins was spotted in a store in Nessebur, Bulgaria.

Corinne Adams said: "They look like the Rockettes; you expect them to start kicking together."

Susan Todd-Raque said: "The clothes are so much like what kids are wearing today. And why were they all stuck outside with a big cord that holds them up against the wall?"

Ermutlu shot this photo using a Canon Powershot A540 camera.

FIFTH PLACE:

DEBORAH CHAMBERSof Tucker / in Washington, D.C.

The shadow of the stained glass window "paints" this column at the National Cathedral, after a snowstorm blanketed the area.

Corinne Adams said: "I like the contemporary light and pattern on the classical image."

Susan Todd-Raque said: "The effect is sort of like watercolor that dapples across the column. The shadows and lines really make the photo."

Chambers shot this photo using a Nikon D-200 camera.
