ANIMALS
SECOND PLACE:
SURESH GUPTA of Alpharetta/in Kenya
It's hard to tell who's the prey in this scene captured in Nakuru Lake Reserve in Kenya.
Corinne Adams said: "It looks like a diorama in a natural history museum. The gesture of the tails mimics the water buffalo's horns."
Susan Todd-Raque said: "They're not paying any attention whatsoever to the photographer. Are they stalking the water buffalo, or is he stalking them?"
Gupta shot this photo using a Nikon D80 camera.
THIRD PLACE:
JEFF WEIKERT of Avondale Estates/in South Africa
A vervet monkey appears to be busy reading the morning toast. He stole it after brunch at the Inyati Game Lodge, Sabi Sands Reserve, South Africa.
Corinne Adams said: "It's so human, it's just spooky."
Susan Todd-Raque said: "It reminds me of my father reading the newspaper. ... The background is out of focus and it calls attention to him. It's intimate and intense ... look at the way his little hands are holding the toast."
Weikert shot this photo using a Nikon D50 digital SLR camera.
FOURTH PLACE:
KAREN HUDSON of Atlanta/in Tarabamba, Peru
"While driving through the tiny town of Tarabamba, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, near Cuzco, Peru, we turned onto a narrow street and came upon this young bicycler herding his animals."
Corinne Adams said: "The color on one side of the photo and the animals on the other balances the photo. It's a charming little scene."
Susan Todd-Raque said: "The dark figure at the end of the road keeps your eye on the vanishing point. ... Blue, green, yellow and red — all the colors are wonderful."
Hudson shot this photo from her car using an inexpensive Nikon digital camera.
FIFTH PLACE:
GRACE MORRIS of Sugar Hill/in Orlando
The photo of these pelicans at Sea World in Orlando should be captioned "Which way did they go, which way did they go?" our judges said.
Corinne Adams said: "The cropping of the photo is so great — you have to discover the second pelican and it balances the first."
Susan Todd-Raque said: "I'm amazed at my wonder at looking at a pelican that closely. I didn't realize they had that tooth at the end of their beak."
Morris shot this photo using a Canon EOS20D digital camera.
