Remote Tanzania trip felt like 'Survivor'

Published on: 03/05/06

Elaine LaMoy, Cumming: "For that ultimate 'Survivor' experience (thatch huts included), Georgians should consider a 'Chimp Safari' to Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania. Even though we have been to Africa six times since 1999, this location certainly proved to be the most remote. Just getting there was part of the fun.

We flew (on a 12-seater) from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. This trip took about four hours.

We overnighted in Kigoma. The next morning, we flew out on the same plane to a remote airstrip within the park. From there, we boarded a boat (just enough room for the 12 of us and our luggage) for the one-hour 'slow' trip to our destination.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. Just consider these positives: arriving at your destination, which certainly resembled the Tribal Council area of 'Survivor'; having dinner every night under the stars and on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — no noise, no neon lights, no hustle and bustle; being able to sit by the campfire and know you are looking at the Congo, which is only about 20 miles across the lake; and falling asleep in your tent to the sounds of Africa.

Oh, yes, don't forget about the chimps. To be able to view them in their natural habitat proved to be the most rewarding part of the trip."
