A 24-year-old woman was in “grave condition” on life support after being submerged in Lake Lanier for at least 12 minutes Sunday afternoon, Hall County fire officials said.

The woman’s family had been swimming near Van Pugh South Park when she went under. Hall County Marine rescue personnel were called and arrived at 3:50 p.m. They found her about 12 minutes later and tried to resuscitate her. She was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

A 6-year-old boy, the woman’s relative, also had to be rescued. But Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said the boy was resuscitated and taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for evaluation.

The woman is in critical condition and the boy is in stable condition, Kimbrell said Monday morning. Authorities have not released the victim’s identities.

On June 15, a 29-year-old Gainesville man drowned after diving off a bridge into Lake Lanier.
