Jackets advance to finals of Athens Regional

Athens — Brad Feltes, who made noise with his glove in Georgia Tech's first win of the NCAA Tournament, let his bat do the talking in Game 2 as the Yellow Jackets advanced to the finals of the Athens Regional with a 6-3 win over Lipscomb.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets (41-19) remain in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of the Georgia-Lipscomb elimination game Sunday at 6 p.m. Since it is a double-elimination tournament, Tech could lose and force another game on Monday night at 7 if needed.

Now 3-0 at UGA's Foley Field this season, the Jackets are in great position to advance.

"That's to be determined," Tech coach Danny Hall said. "I'd rather be in this position than the alternative. But we still have one more to win to win the regional.

Georgia (36-22-1), the regional's top seed, eliminated third-seeded Louisville 9-8 earlier Saturday. The Cardinals' season ended at 41-20.

Tech jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but its bats were quieted for five innings by Lipscomb starter Brandon McClurg. The Jackets finally chased McClurg with two outs in the eighth.

Feltes (pronounced FELL-tiss) was the first to face the Bison's right-handed reliever Kyle Tognazzini. He took the first pitch for strike one, then drove the second on the outside corner into the gap in right-center field to score Luke Murton and Derek Dietrich and give Tech a 5-3 lead.

"As a kid you dream about being in those situations when you're up to bat," said Feltes, a senior from Alpharetta. "I've been fortunate to have done that a couple of times."

That was a bonus for the Jackets because defense is the primary reason Feltes, a career .256 hitter, is in their lineup. In Tech's opening game, the sure-handed third baseman had seven assists, including gunning out Louisville's Jeff Arnold at the plate in the fifth inning of the Jackets' 8-5 win.

But Hall said Feltes is always "clutch" with the bat.

"I felt good when Feltes came up to the plate," Hall said. "There's nobody else I'd rather see up there. He's come through for us a lot."

Tech's Charlie Blackmon made sure the lead Feltes gave them stood up in the ninth inning. His RBI single in the top of the inning extended the lead and his sliding catch in the center field gap with a runner on prevented any additional Lipscomb scoring.

The game ended on Ben Williams' flyout to the warning track in center field.

"It was a great ballgame," Hall said. "I never breathed easy until I saw [Jeff] Rowland catch that last out."

Tech's Taylor Wood got the win, though he pitched only two-thirds of an inning. He got the last out in the seventh and one in the eighth.
