Hummer has toiled in the fields of sport for 24 years for the AJC. It was shortly after he arrived in Atlanta from Florida that the city’s fortunes skyrocketed – Atlanta won the Olympic Games, the Braves went from worst to first, Evander Holyfield ascended to the heavyweight championship. He thinks it was merely coincidence, but who can know for sure?

He has been privileged to cover Bobby Cox back when he had his original knees and Mark Richt when he had his own hips. Man, those guys are getting old.

His most prized artifact is a trophy sent him by an angry friend of former Falcons’ coach and cowboy impersonator Jerry Glanville that features Hummer’s column photo taped on the south end of a north bound jackass.

He is 57 with designs on turning 58 later in October. But in the jargon of every team injury report, we are all day-to-day.

Georgia Tech falls hard to Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes ceded the ACC’s Coastal Division to Georgia Tech last year when they removed themselves from the postseason, imposing that penalty upon themselves in an attempt to head off the NCAA. On Saturday, for a while at least, they seemed to be still in the giving mood. Four ...

Braves require an all grown-up Julio Teheran

The next stage in the gilding of Julio Teheran happens Sunday night, when the 22-year-old becomes the youngest Braves starter in a postseason game since Steve Avery in the early 1990s. Teheran had been measured for this moment since he was plucked from his native Colombia at the tender age ...

The changes just kind of creep up on you

Imagine Red Auerbach leading the Boston Celtics to an NBA title today. In the middle of the champagne-soaked scene inside the victorious locker room, the old coach reaches for his lighter and, as has been his tradition forever, lights up a victory cigar. Immediately a photo of this act would ...

Blazing start turns cold quickly for Kris Medlen

Kris Medlen has been in the position before of losing postseason pitcher, a reluctant expert in the field. But, following Thursday night’s 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, the Braves starter at least held onto the consolation that this was ...

Kris Medlen tries to turn Dodgers’ dreams inside-out

The Medlens chose their stars well. Father and son, Los Angeles Dodgers fans by birth, did not always focus their favors on one arm or one bat. Those come and go. But the voice was just about eternal. “Vin Scully is my idol, Kris’, too,” said Ray Medlen, the father ...

Mettenberger’s return all good, except result

Zach Mettenberger had one final possession to burn his image into the collective memory of Georgia football. Not as the hometown quarterback taking snaps from a center in silver britches. That chance died on a sordid spring-break night in 2010. No, he was out there auditioning for the role of ...

Young Falcons prepare for Brady test

To New England quarterback Tom Brady, the scent of so much fresh meat must be overpowering. He has been known to tear into the rookies on his own team. What, then, is Brady going to do when he zeroes in on some poor plebe across the line Sunday night against ...

Q&A: NBC broadcaster Al Michaels

The Falcons and the Georgia Dome are on TV on Sunday night. The New England Patriots share the playbill. Giving down, distance and subtext for NBC will be Al Michaels, 68, who has been doing these showcase games for 27 years between Monday nights on ABC and Sunday nights with ...

Braves’ Chris Johnson a trade throw-in no longer

When the Braves acquired third baseman Chris Johnson — the human asterisk in the trade that starred Justin Upton — they could not have foreseen he’d be the guy chasing a batting title throughout the season. But maybe that development was not all that far-fetched. There was ample evidence that ...

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss
