Barbara Hartsfield, owner of the Collectible and Antique Chair Gallery in Stone Mountain, boasts more than 3,000 miniature chairs. Among her favorites is this chair in a bottle. "Maybe one day I'll find out how they do that," she said.

The chair woman

Which little chairs came first? It’s hard to say, exactly. Maybe they’re lurking over there, near those chairs climbing nearly two feet high, made entirely from twigs and branches. Or possibly they’re in this display case here, tucked behind a 6-inch-tall “John 3:16” mini-bench and a wee chair with angel ...

Destination Doughnut

I was as nervous as a schoolgirl. A schoolgirl with a coveted reservation, I reminded myself. So what was I so worried about? What if they forgot to write down my reservation? What if I get stuck in traffic or the engine accidentally falls out of my car as I’m ...

Lily Koppel examines space race spouses in ‘Astronaut Wives Club’

‘Medical Treasures at Emory’ a rare treat

A class full of smartypants med school students is pretty much the last group you’d expect to find at a loss for words. About anything. Enter the “Vesalius, Variant A.” What sounds like an exotic new flu strain is actually a copy of “De humani corporis fabrica (On the structure ...

Jingle Davis wrote and Benjamin Galland shot the photographs for “Island Time: An Illustrated History of St. Simons Island, Georgia.” Both are natives of the small and lively island off the southeast coast of Georgia.

St. Simons says …

Many Georgians have long suspected that St. Simons Island packs more interesting history and colorful characters per square, sandy inch than almost any other place in the Deep South. Now there’s written proof of it. “Island Time: An Illustrated History of St. Simons Island, Georgia” is a deeply researched, lushly ...

Your house could be in pictures

Watching her “child” audition for parts in movies and TV projects shot in Atlanta, Livia Hostetler has developed some do’s and don’t’s. Don’t take it personally when the folks making the “Hunger Games” sequel decide to “go in another direction” after two auditions. Do keep a lid on excited talk ...

Little house, big heart

If only for a few more weeks, the little house is still its old familiar self. The calm that cloaks the spit of street where it’s wedged between Buford Highway and downtown Duluth hasn’t yet been shattered. The small sign reading “GSAC” remains noticeable only to those determined — even ...
