A shoulder problem apparently is the reason Georgia has curtailed quarterback Joe Cox’s practice throwing schedule.

Coach Mark Richt said Thursday that Cox skips one day of throwing during the week — Wednesdays — and ESPN quoted Cox on Friday as saying that is because of “nerve problems caused by a muscle that protects my rotator cuff. One of the muscles that protects the rotator cuff has wasted away, and that puts pressure on the rotator cuff.”

Richt said Thursday — and repeated to an alumni gathering Friday — that Cox will start at quarterback against South Carolina on Saturday.

“Joe’s gonna start,” Richt told the group Friday. “Joe’s ready to play.”

On Thursday, Richt said Cox is being given Wednesdays off from throwing “to make sure his arm is as fresh as it can be. ... We want Joe to have as much pop as he can have.”

Cox throws at practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Richt said.

Richt has not ruled out the possibility of playing time for backup quarterback Logan Gray.
