Veazey, a freshman infielder from Tifton, underwent successful back surgery on Friday, UGA said.
The accident occurred on Lumpkin Street on Wednesday night, when, according to Athens police, a car driven by a Conyers woman turned left in front of Veazey's motor scooter. Veazey tried to avoid a collision, but the scooter fell on its side, slid and struck the car, police said.
Veazey's family has set up a "Prayers for Chance" fund to help offset medical expenses. Donations may be sent to Athens First Bank and Trust, attention Phil Bettendorf, P.O. Box 1747, Athens, GA 30603.
