A police report obtained by the newspaper gave this account:
Phillips' wife woke him about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to ask about a woman's phone number she found on his cell phone. During the argument that followed, Phillips grabbed his wife's neck, impeding her breathing. She told him she was going to walk the dog and left their house in northwest Tampa.
Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies arrived at the home, and after being read his rights, Phillips admitted he had pushed his wife by her neck with his right hand.
Phillips was charged with domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony.
Phillips, 30, will become a free agent in March and is not expected to be re-signed by the Bucs. He started two games this season before going on injured reserve with a broken thumb.
"The Buccaneers are aware of the serious charges against Jermaine Phillips and will monitor the situation closely," the team said in a statement.
Phillips, a fifth-round pick in 2002, has made 546 career tackles and 11 interceptions with the Bucs. The Roswell native started 19 games at Georgia and earned All-SEC honorable mention in 2001.
In his Bulldogs' career, Phillips totaled 181 tackles (113 solo), six forced fumbles and five interceptions.
