Oudin wins ‘Heart Award' for Fed Cup play, attitude
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Cobb County's Melanie Oudin was awarded the first-ever Fed Cup Heart Award, given to a player "who has represented her country with distinction, shown exceptional courage on court and demonstrated outstanding commitment to her team" in 2009 Fed Cup play. In addition to reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open this year, Oudin, 18, helped the United States to a Fed Cup quarterfinal victory over Argentina in February.
With the award, Oudin was given $5,000 to give to the charity of her choice, which she directed to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, which she said helped save her sister Christina's life.
Oudin will be the top-ranked player for the U.S. team in the Fed Cup final against Italy, which will take place Saturday and Sunday.
