Walton basketball player collapses in-game

Walton star basketball player Ryan Harrow, who lay unresponsive for more than 20 minutes Tuesday night after collapsing during a game, was hospitalized overnight and treated for dehydration but is alert this morning, according to Walton coach Joe Goydish.

Harrow couldn't be revived immediately after collapsing with less than two minutes remaining in a home game against Milton, the No. 1-ranked team in Class AAAAA.

Walton conceded the game, which Milton was leading 75-54, as paramedics attended to Harrow, an N.C. State signee whom many consider the best shooting guard in the state.

''It's always scary when a kid goes down,'' Goydish said. "He fell out and we couldn't really revive him and had to call paramedics. We were scared. But his vital signs were good [while Harrow was unresponsive]. He was exhaused.''

Goydish said Harrow had been released from the hospital Wednesday morning and was recuperating at home. Harrow would not play this weekend as the team plays games in Jacksonville, Goydish said.

Goydish said Harrow, who is averaging over 30 points per game, also suffered from dehydration in a tournament last week in Raleigh.

''He had a week and worked out Monday night,'' Goydish said. "He didn't feel great but was getting some strength back. ... He's not playing this weekend. We want to get him better. He's going to take some time off.''

The game matched two teams ranked in the top five of Class AAAAA. Milton's star player, Julian Royal, did not play due to a finger injury.
