The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A grand jury has declined to issue any indictments in a brawl that left an east Georgia high school coach seriously injured.

The Hancock County grand jury, which met Wednesday, decided that "no indictment be returned against anybody" in the Oct. 14 fight after a game between Hancock Central and Warren County, the Augusta Chronicle reported Thursday.

According to Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright, the GBI's report on the fight said players for both teams were responsible for instigating the fight, the Chronicle said.

The brawl left Warren County head coach David Daniel hospitalized with serious injuries after he was hit in the face. Bright said a Hancock Central player admitted hitting Daniel but said he was only fighting back after the coach punched him three times during the post-game confrontation outside the visiting team's lockerroom. Bright said the GBI's report indicated that Daniel was hit with a fist, not a football helmet as has been reported.
