The Trojans’ senior quarterback passed for 545 yards, breaking the state’s all-time single-game record, to lead Lassiter to a 56-32 victory against Milton on Friday night.
The previous record, which had stood for 32 years, was set by Lamar County’s Ron Hinson against Troup in 1977. Mason was 32 of 45 with six touchdowns and completed passes to 10 different receivers.
“This record tonight, it goes to all of my receivers and my O-line,” Mason said. “Y’all saw it tonight. There was just yards after catch, yards after catch, yards after catch. I couldn’t be blessed with a better receiving corps and offensive line.”
Lassiter, 7-0 and 6-0 in Region 6-AAAAA, entered the game in a three-way tie with Roswell and Walton for first in the region, one game ahead of fourth-place Milton (4-3, 4-2). Lassiter’s victory and Walton’s loss to Centennial leaves the Trojans tied with Roswell, who they will meet in the season finale.
Mason threw two touchdown passes in the first seven minutes, and the Trojans never trailed. But Milton made it interesting for a while.
The Eagles answered Lassiter’s early touchdowns with two of their own, scoring on a 58-yard pass from Wil Perry to Dai Jon Parker and a 42-yard pass from Perry to Ryan Hume.
The teams exchanged touchdowns again, with Lassiter holding a 22-20 lead with 8:46 remaining in the first half. But Lassiter scored twice more in the final 3:21 of the half for a 36-20 lead. Milton never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Mason was already close to the record midway through the third quarter, but the Trojans’ big lead led to somewhat more conservative play-calling. He had 381 of his yards in the first half.
“We don’t have a guy who keeps our stats during the game, so I don’t really know what [Mason] did,” Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey said. “I just know he had a great night and has played great for us all year.”
