Six Georgia high schools on Wednesday won their appeals to move to another region for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

The GHSA's reclassification committee granted the appeals of Berkmar, Harris County, Cedartown, Toombs County, Vidalia and Johnson County to move into different regions from the ones they were assigned on Dec. 2.

"It was huge for us simply because one-third of the schools in Region 2-A are in counties that touch our county line," Vidalia coach Lee Chomskis told GHSF Daily on Wednesday. Chomskis was referring to Tattnall, Jeff Davis and Appling counties. Vidalia and Toombs County were moved from Region 3-A to 2-A.

Moving Toombs and Vidalia to Region 2 also ensures there will be at least eight football teams playing a region schedule in 2010. Coastal is a new Savannah school that won't play football in 2010, and Jeff Davis is expected to play a non-region schedule.

In other moves, the reclassification committee swapped the teams in regions 5-A and 7-A to correspond to traditional region numbering for those schools.

The final step of reclassification will be final approval by the GHSA's executive committee on Jan. 12.

Here's a summary of Wednesday's appeals, as well as a look at the up-to-date region alignments:
