Camden County, Peach County and Buford have 10 state championship among them this decade.
In the end, none of the five state champions crowned over the weekend were great surprises. All were ranked in preseason and expected to contend.
Here's a quick look at each:
- Camden County, ranked No. 4 in preseason, won its third Class AAAAA championship this decade and defended its title from 2008. Camden's 121 victories are the second-most for a decade in the highest classification to Valdosta's 125 in the 1980s.
- Sandy Creek, ranked No. 5 in AAAA in preseason, became the first Fayette County school to win a state championship. Chip Walker and father Rodney Walker became the first father-son pair to win state championships as head coaches. Rodney's came with West Rome in 1984.
- Peach County, ranked No. 7 in AAA in preseason, had won titles in 2005 and 2006, but this is the first unbeaten Peach County team in history at 15-0. Peach County coach Chad Campbell and brother Lee Campbell became the first brothers to win state championships as head coaches. Lee was with Hawkinsville in 2003 and 2004.
- Buford, ranked No. 1 in AA in preseason, won its sixth state title of the decade. Buford's 139 victories since 2000 are the most in one decade in any classification. Only Valdosta, with seven in the 1960s, has won more state titles in a decade.
- Wilcox County, ranked No. 2 in A in preseason, had two early losses and dropped out of the rankings briefly but came back to bag the school's first state title with an alumnus, Mark Ledford, as its head coach.
