Q&A with Tech's Chandler Anderson

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It is a lonely life Chandler Anderson has lived the past few weeks.

Georgia Tech's punter never got on the field (except to hold on extra points) in Saturday's thrilling 49-44 victory against Florida State.

In fact, he hasn't punted more three times in a game since doing so six times against Clemson more than a month ago.

But when he does get to swing his leg, he's averaging 41.8 yards per punt, fourth-best in the ACC.

Anderson, a redshirt sophomore from Columbus, hopes he doesn't have to be used in Saturday's game against No. 4 Virginia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium, but said he will be ready when called.

Q: Do you miss punting?

A: [Laughs] No. Our offense did a good job this week putting points on the board. It was a good thing for Tech to keep the punt team off the field. Good thing.

Q: What does the phrase "Beamerball" mean to you?

A: Beamerball. I've never really heard that. Virginia Tech, they've got a great program and they are doing very well this year. From a punting aspect, we're just going to execute the same way we do. Get a new game plan together and go out and do what we do.

Q: Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but it doesn't seem like teams are trying to pressure you this season. Or if they have, you have picked it up.

A: Mississippi State sent everybody. It's the scheme that they come up with week in and week out. It's not any specific thing for them to pull everybody off, but it's just kind of what we do. Some teams have sent everybody at once. It just depends upon what they do.

Q: What do you think about the Hokies and their reputation for blocking kicks (they've blocked one this season)?

A: Like I said, they're a great program. It's going to be a fight for us. We've got our game plan and try to do the best thing possible with our players.

Q: Are you pleased with your average so far this season?

A: I mean, I could be a little more pleased. I'm getting more comfortable game in and game out. From a punt team perspective, everyone continues to do better so I'm happy with that.
