Georgia leads nation with 11 baseball draft picks

Athens — The University of Georgia baseball program has a new claim to fame.

Georgia led the nation with 11 players taken in baseball’s amateur draft, which ended on Thursday. The school’s previous high mark for players drafted in one year was six, most recently in 2008.

Florida and Ole Miss each had 10 players drafted.

Georgia’s highest pick was first baseman Rich Poythress, taken in the second round by Seattle. Pitcher Trevor Holder was a third-round pick by Washington, which later drafted another pitcher, Dean Weaver, in the seventh round.

Georgia also had six signees drafted.
