Despite going through extensive negotiations with Georgia officials through much of the day Tuesday, Missouri coach Mike Anderson chose instead to sign a new seven-year contract to remain with the Tigers. Terms were not disclosed by the school, but media outlets citing sources reported the new contract was worth about $1.5 million a year. Anderson had two years remaining on a contract that paid him $850,000 annually.

“We are excited coach Anderson is going to be at the University of Missouri for a long time,” athletics director Mike Alden said in a statement. “He’s done a tremendous job rebuilding our basketball tradition and is poised to lead our program to new heights in the coming years.”

Meanwhile, after a full day of deliberation, Memphis coach John Calipari accepted the richest contract offer in college basketball history early Tuesday evening from Kentucky — eight years for a reported $35 million. According to Anderson’s agent, Jimmy Sexton of Memphis, Anderson also was eyeing the Memphis job.

Where Georgia might turn now is unclear. Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel was considered one of the Bulldogs’ top targets. Monday, Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castiglione, citing personal philosophy, declined to say whether Georgia had sought permission to contact Capel. And phone calls to Capel have not been returned.

The criteria set forth by Georgia athletics director Damon Evans and UGA President Michael Adams at the outset of its coaching change — they fired Dennis Felton on Jan. 29 — was for an experienced, successful Division I head coach. A few coaches who fit that description are Clemson’s Oliver Purnell, Baylor’s Scott Drew, Xavier’s Sean Miller, Butler’s Brad Stevens and Penn State’s Ed DeChellis.

Evans remained in his Athens office well into the evening Tuesday, working the phones and discussing the Bulldogs’ options with Adams and Dan Parker of Parker Executive Search. Evans, who leaves for Detroit and the Final Four on Thursday, declined to discuss specifics or confirm any of the names of potential candidates.

“We hope to have a coach soon,” he said.

The sooner the better, it would seem.
