Athens — Troy Brewer on Wednesday became the second Georgia basketball player to raise his hand to leave.
Brewer joins fellow guard Zac Swansey, who told the AJC on Monday he had asked for a release from his scholarship. At the time Swansey said Brewer, a 6-5 shooting guard from Rockville, Md., also intended to transfer. But that was not official until Wednesday when Brewer informed UGA’s administrator for men’s basketball, Arthur Johnson, of his intentions.
“Brewer did request permission to talk to other schools, which we have granted,” Claude Felton, Georgia’s director of sports communications, confirmed.
Neither player has been released from their scholarship yet, according to UGA compliance director Eric Baumgartner.
If the two players decide to transfer that will leave Georgia — and whomever becomes the new coach — with just eight returning lettermen and four backcourt players. The Bulldogs also have two signees for next season, guard Demario Mayfield of Franklin County and center Daniel Miller of Loganville.
Georgia currently has one scholarship left to offer but all recruiting efforts are on hold, Johnson said.
