Dogs may lose safety Jones too

Georgia safety Reshad Jones is considering following three teammates into the NFL draft after all.

In a brief phone conversation late Wednesday night, Jones confirmed he is rethinking his earlier plan to stay in school. But he said he won’t know for sure what he’s going to do until sometime today.

“It’s not [decided],” he said.

The clock is ticking, because this is the last day the NFL allows eligible underclassmen - those three years removed from high school — to enter the 2009 draft.

Jones, from Atlanta, asked an NFL advisory committee last month for a projection of his draft status. But he said during preparations for the Capital One Bowl that he would be back with the Bulldogs in 2009. And as recently as Monday night, he “reconfirmed he’s coming back,” Georgia spokesman Claude Felton said Tuesday.

But all of that was up in the air by Wednesday night and will be resolved, once and for all, today.

As a redshirt sophomore this past season, Jones led the Bulldogs with five interceptions. He was second on the team in tackles with 76. He was named second-team all-SEC by the Associated Press.

Georgia already has lost three underclassmen to the NFL draft - quarterback Matthew Stafford, tailback Knowshon Moreno and cornerback Asher Allen.
