How the coaches voted

Richt was the only coach who voted for the Gators to play Alabama for the title, which would be a rematch of the SEC Championship game. The Gators defeated the Tide 31-20 on Saturday at the Georgia Dome. The national championship game will be played in Miami on Jan. 8 at 8 p.m.

The coaches’ poll represents one-third of the BCS standings. Sixty one coaches vote.

Richt was the only one of seven SEC coaches who voted who didn’t think the Sooners were Nos. 1 or 2. Every other SEC coaches’ ballot had the Gators and Sooners playing for the title. The SEC coaches were represented by three men who are no longer with their schools: Sylvester Croom, Phillip Fulmer, Tommy Tuberville. The other three coaches were South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier, LSU’s Les Miles and Florida’s Urban Meyer.

Two of six ACC coaches who voted preferred Oklahoma-Texas in the national championship game. FSU coach Bobby Bowden and N.C. State’s Tom O’Brien wanted to see a rematch of the two teams. The Longhorns defeated the Sooners, 45-35, in Dallas on Oct. 11.

Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer wanted to see Florida-Texas in the championship game.
