Athens — For the first time in 43 years, Georgia plays a football game at Sanford Stadium Saturday night without Larry Munson calling the action. But his voice was heard briefly on the pre-game radio show.
Munson, who announced his retirement Monday, spoke with his long-time broadcast partners by phone from his west Athens home about two hours before kickoff.

“I’m fine, and I’m looking forward to retirement,” Munson said. “It’ll be a little bit of a while, but I need to fish. I’m way behind.”
Referring to Florida’s loss to Ole Miss Saturday, Munson said: “I believe there are a bunch of people in the league that are pretty happy with how some of these games have gone.”
Scott Howard, who has taken over play-by-play duties for at least the rest of this season, asked Munson at the end of the segment if he had any last-minute advice.
“Just get some good seats,” Munson said, “and guard them with a gun.”
Munson turns 86 Sunday.
