Omaha, Neb. — Nick Montgomery will start the second game of the championship series against Fresno State, the senior's second chance at the College World Series.

Montgomery (4-2, 4.30 ERA) started a week ago against Stanford, but was yanked after three innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk against the Cardinal.

Coach David Perno is hoping for an outing similar to one Montgomery had against Georgia Tech (a nine-inning shutout) or N.C. State (three runs in six innings).

Fresno State is expected to start right-hander Justin Miller (6-4), who started the team's second game, but lasted only four innings against North Carolina. Miller has started 16 games and has a 5.10 ERA in 84-2/3 innings.

Success in series

The NCAA championship marks the 15th three-game series in which Georgia has participated this season. They've won 10 of the previous 14, including the Super Regional against North Carolina State.

Georgia is 7-1 when it has won the first game of the series. The only loss came against Florida in late April, when the Bulldogs won the first game 7-4, but lost the next two 7-2.

Three times Georgia has lost the series opener and bounced back to win: against Arkansas, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Celebrity sightings

The stars were out at Rosenblatt Stadium for the first game of the championship series. Among those in attendance were Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, Hall of Fame rich guy Warren Buffett, UGA president Michael Adams, UGA athletics director Damon Evans, and "Facing the Giants" film star Mark Richt, an Omaha native who also coaches the Georgia football team.

First meeting

Georgia had never played Fresno State in baseball. The Fres-Dogs have a rich baseball tradition and have produced such major leaguers are Terry Pendleton, Dick Ruthven, Dan Gladden, Tom Goodwin and Jeff Weaver.
