NCAA tennis: Dogs draw Ole Miss in quarters
Georgia beat No. 4 Rebels in March

Tulsa, Okla. — It was a very different Georgia team that last met Ole Miss, the Bulldogs' opponent in Sunday's NCAA Tennis Championship quarterfinals.

Back on the second day of March, when the two teams played in Athens, the Bulldogs were missing their top two singles players, seniors Luis Flores and Travis Helgeson, due to injuries. Sophomore Jamie Hunt, who played No. 6 last season, played at the No. 2 spot. Nate Schnugg moved up to play No. 1. Georgia reserves Josh Varela and Drake Bernstein came in to play the bottom two singles positions and teamed up as the No. 3 doubles team.

Meanwhile, the No. 4-ranked Rebels came in fully loaded.

Georgia won 5-2.

It remains one of the most stunning wins in the Bulldogs' considerable tennis history.

"I think our win in March was probably one of the better ones for our program for the number of things we had to overcome, for the courage we had to show under duress, for the fact that we were playing with our number 7 and 8 players in our lineup," coach Manuel Diaz said after Georgia's practice Saturday.

"That match showed how deep we are," Schnugg said. "Beating the No. 4 team in the country without our two best players, I've heard it was one of the best wins in SEC history. I don't know about that, but I know it showed us how good we could be."

The winner of today's match gets the Baylor-Virginia winner in the national semifinals on Monday. The Cavaliers are undefeated and ranked No. 1.

Now Georgia is a healthy team and the lineup is back to normal. Schnugg is back at 2 and Hunt is at 4. The defending national championship Bulldogs, as might be expected, are confident.

The two teams are very closely matched, with similar records against a similar schedule. The Rebels (24-4) are actually ranked higher than the No. 5-ranked Bulldogs (24-3) but they received a lower seed (fifth to fourth) because of that head-to-head loss.

"We played Georgia and lost, but the good thing is we don't play at their place this time," said Ole Miss senior Matthias Wellerman. "It's really tough to play Georgia at Georgia. I don't know what their home record is, but I know they haven't lost many matches there the last four years."

For the record, Georgia hasn't lost at home since April 23, 2005, a streak of 47 matches. But the last time the Bulldogs lost in the NCAA quarterfinals was in 2005 in College Station, Texas — to the Rebels.

Georgia is determined to not let that happen again.

"I'm sure they'll be out for redemption," said Schnugg, a confident grin breaking out on his face, "but I don't think they're going to get it."
