Gym Dogs win fourth straight NCAA title

Athens — Let's see here: Drive for Five. Or maybe: Perfect Ten.

Georgia gymnastics has to come up with some sort of slogan because "Back 4 More" has been accomplished. The Gym Dogs rather easily captured their fourth straight national title and ninth in Suzanne Yoculan's 25-year career by posting a 197.45 total at the Super Six in front of a capacity crowd of 7,800 fan at Stegeman Coliseum on Friday night.

More on the Gym Dogs

"It was a storybook ending; a dream come true,'" said senior Audrey Bowers. "Four in a row is amazing.

"It never got old," added Nikki Childs.

It never got close on the final night of the season.

Georgia posted a 49.475 on the floor to start the night and never looked back.

"We started out strong and that made a difference," Yoculan said.

Georgia finished strong as well. The Gym Dogs wrapped up the title with a 9.95 from senior Katie Heenan on the beam. Courtney McCool put a bow on that with a 9.9 on beam.

After that, all Georgia had to do was wait through the final rotation. Utah, which has nine national titles to its credit, was really the only team with a chance to catch Georgia. And the Utes were on bars.

Utah was the one event and one team that Yoculan had been wary of during the championship. But the Utes had to post a 49.675 (9.935 average per gymnast) to tie Georgia. Instead, they scored a 49.35 and finished with a 197.125.

Florida, Alabama and LSU, the three teams expected to the put the most pressure on Georgia, never did. "We didn't apply the pressure that we did at the SECs," said Alabama coach Sarah Patterson.

"It wasn't that nobody applied pressure to [Georgia], it was that they were comfortable," said Florida's Amanda Castillo. "They just felt so comfortable because they were at home in front of their crowd."

What little drama there was involved Heenan and McCool early in the meet. Both faltered as McCool stepped out on the floor and posted a 9.775. Heenan fell on the bars and received a 9.325.

Each was picked up by teammates and did a few things themselves to make up for the errors. Freshman Cassidy McCombs scored a 9.9 on all three of her events — bars, vault and floor. Tiffany Tolnay had a 9.9 on floor. McCool had a 9.925 on bars. And Heenan had a 9.95 on floor.

"We had a lot of people step up," Yoculan said. "[This title] wasn't about anybody being perfect or having an outstanding meet it was about who made the fewest mistakes.

"Sometimes winning a national championship is relative to how everybody else is doing, and tonight we were the better team."

Now, of course, comes the wonder whether this team can repeat again. Next season will be Yoculan's last, as she announced her retirement before this season. And it appears Georgia will once again be the favorite. While it loses Nikki Childs and 13-time All-American Heenan, it gains arguably the top collegiate gymnast in the country, Courtney Kupets.

Kupets, a junior, ruptured her Achilles midway through this season but should be ready for a return next year.

"I say watch out," Heenan said. "I do think five in a row is a possibility."
