Newnan golfer stands out at Women’s Open

Just two weeks after Marietta native Melanie Oudin surprised the world at Wimbledon, 24-year-old Jean Reynolds of Newnan wowed golf fans at the U.S. Women’s Open Championship, reaching third place after the third round.

Sunday, the former UGA golfer shot a disappointing six over par but still finished in the top 20.

In Saturday’s third round, Reynolds started two strokes off the lead. She finished Sunday in a nine-way tie for 17th.

This year’s tournament marked Reynolds’ second Women’s Open.

Reynolds, a second-year professional and UGA grad, has had two wins on the Duramed Futures Tour, and is the tour’s leading money winner with more than $63,000. She won the Florida’s Natural Growers Charity Classic in March and the Horseshoe Casino Classic in Indiana in June.

Reynolds took a break from the game for more than a year after her freshman season at UGA, where she earned a degree in child and family development.

She finished the par-71, 6,740-yard Saucon Valley Country Club course at this year’s open eight over par for the four-day tournament.
