Newberry, S.C. — Heath Benedict, a two-time Little All-American offensive lineman at Newberry College, was found dead on a couch in his Jacksonville, Fla., home.
Police say no foul play is suspected in the Wednesday night death of the 24-year-old Benedict, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound junior who had planned to enter the NFL draft.
Newberry coach Zak Willis says Benedict underwent extensive medical tests at the NFL scouting combine last month and nothing unusual was found. Willis says Benedict will be remembered as one of the best to play at the NCAA Division II school.
Benedict, who redshirted at Tennessee in 2002 before moving to Newberry, was a native of the Netherlands. He played high school football at the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J.
Benedict's body has been taken to a medical examiner's office.
