O'NEILL WILLIAMS: Weekend outdoors show worth a visit
National Wild Turkey Federation Convention to be held at Georgia World Congress Center

Being the outdoors guy I am and always encouraging families to spend time outside, I'd like for you to consider a day in the "great indoors" this week.

Starting Thursday and running through the weekend, Atlanta will host the National Wild Turkey Federation Convention and Sport Show at the Georgia World Congress Center. The convention hasn't been in town since 1996. It is always a tremendous success, and we're fortunate to have it here at home this year. You should make plans to attend.

There will be nearly 600 exhibit booths loaded with everything one could possibly need for turkey season, including lots of gear designed just for women hunters. And if it's information you're looking for, you'll not be disappointed with the seminars, presented daily, featuring some of the most knowledgeable turkey hunters in the country.

While you're there, check out the entries for the taxidermy and custom call-making contests. They are truly works of art. Speaking of contests, don't miss the Grand National Turkey Calling Championships which draw contestants from all over the country.

As you know, I've always maintained that all sportsmen should belong to at least two conservation organizations. The NWTF is certainly worthy of your consideration. Since its start in 1973 with 1300 members, it has grown to over 550,000 today with chapters in Canada and, most recently, Mexico.

This membership, along with their conservation partners, has raised and spent more than $258 million in its effort to uphold our hunting traditions and has conserved more than 13.1 million acres of wildlife habitat.

By attending events of this nature sponsored by organizations like the NWTF, we not only enjoy and share a common passion with like-minded enthusiasts, but we support them and the many volunteers who carry out our conservation goals.

So, bring the whole family and make a day of it. Rest assured there will be plenty of displays and activities for everyone in the family to enjoy and learn something new. I hope see you there.

O'Neill Williams hosts "O'Neill Outside" 4-6 a.m. Saturdays on WSB 750 AM. His TV show is shown on Sun Sports, SportSouth and Versus.
