Dirt racer Rainey hurt in Chatsworth

Dirt racer Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs was injured Saturday in a vicious crash at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth. His Super Late Model car slammed into the Turn 3 wall during qualifying after a mechanical failure. He was airlifted to a Chattanooga hospital, where he was diagnosed with torn neck muscles and deep bruises. He was not wearing a head-and-neck restraint, but he said he's now considering the purchase of a HANS, which is mandatory in NASCAR's elite divisions.

"After this lick, it's on my mind to check into," he said.

Rainey hopes his body heals in time to compete in the Jimmy Mosteller Classic at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock on April 8.

After Rainey's crash, Clint Smith of Senoia passed Tim McCreadie after a late-race restart to win the 60-lap event.
