How Poulter aced No. 16

Published on: 04/11/08

Ian Poulter made a hole-in-one at the 170-yard 16th hole. The Englishman hit an 8-iron that found the ledge of the green and spun back 25 feet into the cup. It's the 11th hole-in-one at that hole, the first since Trevor Immelman in 2005.

How to hit that shot: "The player has to protect against the short side bunker on the left. A high, spinny shot is required to aim up on the shelf in a safe zone and try to pull it back toward the hole. He hit an 8-iron from 170, which certainly produces more spin than a 6- or 7-iron from the same distance. He took the shorter club, made a more aggressive swing to carry it past the hole with the hope that it spins back down the slope. Basically one less club, ball up slightly in the stance, tilt the shoulders up toward the target a little higher than normal and try to make the best contact possible with the most speed you can generate."

The mental approach: "By that point he was settled down, in a nice rhythm and was committed to the shot. You never try to play prevent defense, and he picked a quadrant of the green to hit to, and got a green light."
