Camden County subdues No. 7 Norcross

Camden County attempted a pass on its first series Saturday.
That 3-yard completion out of the way, the Wildcats all but closed that portion of the playbook and moved on to what they do best: running the wing-T and playing ferocious defense.
With that proven combination, No. 3 Camden County subdued No. 7 Norcross 21-6 in the Georgia Dome.
The Wildcats opened the third quarter with a punishing 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that made it 14-3.
All 10 were running plays. Greg Baker zipped around left end and cut back inside for the 11-yard score.
“We told ‘em at halftime that their guy is going to kick it in the end zone, so we need an 80-yard drive and we’re going to go out, try to line up and mash ‘em,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron said. “And the kids did a real good job of that.”
The Blue Devils, making their first appearance in the Dome, could not run and were forced to pass under intense pressure.
Senior quarterback Charles King hit 16 of 30 throws for 183 yards, but he was sacked five times and intercepted once. Miami commitment Prince Kent caught eight balls for 85 yards.
Coach Keith Maloof was left to wonder how the game might have unfolded if Norcross had capitalized on early field position. The Blue Devils stalled due to five pre-snap penalties in the first half.
“We needed to jump on ‘em early and we didn’t,” Maloof said. “Little undisciplined things killed us. They scored touchdowns and we scored field goals, and you can’t get yourself in that situation against a great football team.”
Maryland commitment D.J. Adams found few holes in the fast Wildcats defense. He gained 27 yards on 13 carries and lost a fumble.
Still, Herron wasn’t impressed with his defense.
“We were out on the field too long defensively,” he said. “We’re not used to that.”
Norcross stayed within striking distance throughout the second half. Trailing 14-6 midway through the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils faced fourth-and-10 from the Camden 37. They tried a trick play, wideout Arius Wright taking a toss and looking to throw.
Linebacker Robert Williams buried him for a big loss and a turnover on downs.
That all but sealed the Wildcats’ 67th consecutive regular-season win against Georgia opponents.
