Macon — While Carver-Columbus was denied its place in history, No. 4 Glenn Hills made history.

With its 64-57 win over unranked Carver Saturday at Macon Coliseum, Glenn Hills claimed its first championship in a boys' sport in the school's 40-year history. It was the second basketball title for the school with the girls team winning the 2002 championship.

Carver was trying to become the first school since Clinch County in 1988-89 to win a football and basketball championship in the same school year.

In December, the Tigers won the school's first football title by beating Cairo.

Glenn Hills held a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but Carver (22-10) cut it to 59-55 with 1:09 remaining on a layup by Carlos Ross, a running back on the championship football team.

Spartans forward Shawn Allen hit two free throws after Carver's Jarvis Jones picked up his fifth foul to increase the lead to 61-55 and the Tigers were never able to recover. The Tigers came along way throughout the season.

Glenn Hills (29-2) was led by Reggie Middleton and Shawn Allen, who each had 18 points. Jones had a game-high 23 points for the Tigers. Jones, the AJC Class AAA defensive player of the year, is considered a top football recruit.

With six players, including three starters, involved in the football playoffs, the Tigers got off to a slow start. Carver lost four of its first eight games before the start of the new year to finish fourth in the region.

The Tigers defeated defending state champion Jordan in the Region 2-AAAA semifinals before winning the region championship.
