HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2005-06
The champions: Girls soccerClass AAAAA: Starr's Mill
The Panthers (17-2-1) won their third outright state title and fourth overall since 1999 by defeating Harrison 3-1 in the championship game. Tannah Castro scored two goals, and senior Kelley O'Hara had the game-winner. But it was O'Hara's performance of two goals and two assists during a magical 5-4 quarterfinal victory against defending champion Parkview that will be remembered. The victory was a great sendoff for Starr's Mill coach Greg Shifflett, who is moving to Montana.
Class AAAA: Woodward Academy
The War Eagles (16-4-2) picked the perfect time to finally beat region foe McIntosh with a 3-0 victory in the championship game after losing twice to the Chiefs earlier in the season. Underclassmen Shannon Weatherington, Lucy Boone and Sara Elliott supplied the goals that day. But senior Danielle Abelson seemingly pushed Woodward Academy to its first state championship. The Georgia signee scored a team-leading 20 goals despite spending much of her time as a defender.
Class AAA: Westminster, Blessed Trinity
It was yet another battle of region rivals that decided matters. In the end, the only thing decided was two proud programs sharing the trophy after a 1-1 tie. Westminster sophomore Jenna Buckley and Blessed Trinity junior Ashley Marks provided the goals as the teams finished 1-1-1 against each other during the season. Westminster's Jack Pickard ended his 23-year coaching career with a fifth consecutive state title and eighth overall. It was Blessed Trinity's second title in three years.
Class AA/A: Savannah Country Day, Holy Innocents'
Another championship match ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Holy Innocents' was outshot 28-3, but senior Anna Pickren's goal almost carried the day before Savannah Country Day's Virginia Lewis scored in the waning moments. The tie gave Holy Innocents' (15-4-2) its first state title and SCD (17-2-3) its second.
