The last time the Hawks reached the playoffs, Regis Philbin was fashionable (remember the monochromatic suit-and-tie?), Ricky Martin was hip and a Clinton was battling for political survival.
While much has changed in the nine years between playoff appearances, some things remain familiar.

The 1998-99 Hawks, like this year's edition, had a Smith, Williams and Johnson on their roster. Steve Smith was a stud. Shammond Williams, not so much. Anthony Johnson was a Hawk in '99 and '08, though he was traded to Sacramento – along with another Williams, Shelden – for Mike Bibby on Feb. 16. Fortunately, All-Star Joe Johnson remains.
If Y2K wiped out your memory, here's a look back — at 1999 and beyond.
More for less:
Because of the NBA player's strike, the 1998-99 Hawks played only 50 games, winning 31. They've topped that win total only three times since, despite playing 82 games each season.
Too bad they can't play New York again:
The Hawks went 3,295 days between playoff appearances. On May 24, 1999, the Hawks lost Game 4 to the underdog New York Knicks, 79-66. Since then, the Hawks are 255-483 in regular-season games; New York hasn't been much better: 316-422. They were 23-59 this year.
Thrice the price:
A gallon of unleaded gasoline averaged $1.17 in 1999.
The best coached here:
The coach of the 1998-99 Hawks, Lenny Wilkens, holds the NBA record for regular-season coaching victories, passing Celtics legend Red Auerbach in 1995. Auerbach also coached the Hawks, in 1950, when the franchise — based in Moline, Ill., — was known as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Three other former Hawks coaches rank in the Top 20: Red Holzman, Mike Fratello and Cotton Fitzsimmons.
Four-squared:
The Hawks have called four cities home: Moline, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Atlanta, where they've played in four arenas: Philips, the Omni, Alexander Memorial Coliseum and the Georgia Dome.
No. 1 hit last time the Hawks were in the playoffs:
"Livin' la Vida Loca," by Ricky Martin.
Top-rated TV show in May, 1999:
"Who Wants to be a Millionaire"
126 wins, 210 losses:
The Hawks all-time record vs. Boston
It happened in 1999:
• The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 11,000 for the first time, at 11,014.70.
• Microsoft releases Windows 98 Second Edition.
• Napster debuts
• Hugo Chavez is elected president of Venezuela.
• The Braves, winners of 103 games, reach the World Series for the fifth time in nine years. They were swept by the New York Yankees and haven't reached the Fall Classic since.
