Jim Furyk didn’t worry about testing the greens on the first hole at East Lake. He dropped his approach shot into the cup from 120 yards for an eagle.

The rest of the field got the idea in a hurry that East Lake was going to have more teeth this year with its revamped Bermuda greens. The first hole, typically middle-of-the-road in terms of toughness, gave up only three birdies to the other 29 players in the first round.

Chad Campbell, the first player off the tee, made a 17-footer for birdie to start the morning. But only Dudley Hart, Billy Mayfair and Steve Stricker were able to follow suit.

Furyk’s eagle is on the first hole is only the second ever recorded during The Tour Championship.
