Past, future come together at Tour Championship

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The past and future intersected briefly Thursday at The Tour Championship.

Errie Ball, 97, the last surviving player from the inaugural Masters, and Martavious Adams, 14, a product of The First Tee at East Lake, hit ceremonial opening drives at East Lake Golf Club.

Ball was an assistant golf professional at East Lake in 1930 and made his return trip in 20 years. He was guest at a morning session that retraced some of the club’s history.

Adams, who has a 4 handicap, said, “I wanted to make sure I hit it right down the middle. I didn’t want to hit it fat. To see it going down the fairway was pretty amazing.”
